Awareness is the bedrock of informed Action. The apparel industry is a major contributor to climate change, accounting for up to 10% of global carbon emissions. This is more than the aviation and shipping industries combined. It takes 3,781 liters of water to produce a single pair of denim jeans. According to the United Nations Alliance for Sustainable Fashion, around 215 trillion liters of water are consumed by the clothing and textile industry each year. Of the total fiber input used for clothing, 87 % is incinerated or disposed off in landfills and half a million tons of plastic microfibers are dumped into the ocean. New garment production doubled from 50 billion in 2000 to 100 billion in 2020 spewing microfibers throughout the food chain which includes human ingestion. This is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg (and they too are melting owing the GHG emissions)!
